COVER: This catalog features yet another floral arrangement by Carl Starker, this time of 1953 Dykes Medalist 'Truly Yours'.
ABOUT: Typical of the 1950s catalogs.
GREETING: Pictured below is a portion of our Iris display garden photographed in May of 1956. The visitors are Mrs. Jean Stevens, President of the New Zealand Iris Society, and Marion Walker, President of the American Iris Society. Mrs. Stevens is the noted antipodean Iris hybridizer, whose very original creations (such as Pinnacle, Polar Cap, Mystic Melody) it has been our privledge to introduce in recent years. And we are impatiently waiting the first blooms here in America of her new red and white amonea, Finest Hour.
Last year at Iris time Mr. and Mrs. Stevens made their first tirp to the United States, where Mrs. Stevens was honored guest of the American Iris Society at their annual convention in Los Angeles. Later Mr. and Mrs. Stevens spent a fortnight with us. Their penetrating understading of Iris, broad knowledge of horticulture and keen humor made their visit as delightful as it was memorable.
Each year during Iris time a throng of Iris lovers visit our display garden. We wish that many more might do so. Since that is not feasible, we send to scores of thousands of garden enthusiasts each year our "Iris Lover's Catalog" to spread the gospel of Iris beauty.
To the thousands of gardeners who honored us with their Iris orders last year, we want to say, "Thanks-- and thanks, again!" Many of your kind letters were an inspiration. We hope that you will have a thrilling blooming season and that the hobby of Iris growing will bring you untold pleasure and satisfaction through the years.
