COVER: This 8.5" x 11" catalog features one of the many floral iris arrangements by Carl Starker. The cover of the 1961 catalog is unique as it features an Iris not introduced by Schreiner's: June Meredith.
ABOUT: This is a typical catalog where it's type ran until the mid-70s. Irises were listed alphabetically, followed by their description with pictures scattered throughout the catalog. The font style consisted of the variety names in a sans-serif, all-caps font. The description was then slightly smaller in a serif-type font. They would use this format for many decades, perhaps until the 1985, but definitely by 1987, where the blue color was used for the names.
GREETING: For Landscape and Beauty: Iris Stand Supreme. Americans are a nation of home lovers. Because home and garden are inseparable, gardening has become the No. 1 national pastime, with home beautification the goal of every aspriring gardener.
Since Iris are of preeminent value as a landscape flower, they can help you make your dream of a more beautiful setting for your home come true. Few flowers can concentrate so much beauty in a limited area as Iris. Their unique form, aristocratic bearing, and shimmering coloring in an extraordinary range of hues combine to produce a highly glamorous, orchideaceous effect. Few flowers are so carefree as Iris: their exquisite beauty are so genereous in the way a single rhizome quickly becomes a glorious drift of color.
So we say--why wait to give your garden the wonderful lift of a planting of the newer, finer modern Iris? Along your garden path, shrub border, or lot line they'll be happily at home, ready to give you a lifetime of enjoyment.
