COVER: The 1968 Iris Lover's Catalog features two 1968 introductions: Candalaria and Pink Horizon. In the background is "Iris Time at Schreiner's," a photograph first used on the 1964 catalog and at least until 1984.
ABOUT: This catalog is similar to those of the Schreiner catalogs of the late 1940s until the mid 1970s. Irises were listed alphabetically, followed by their description with pictures scattered throughout the catalog. The font style consisted of the variety names in a sans-serif, all-caps font. The description was then slightly smaller in a serif-type font. They would use this format for many decades, perhaps until the 1985, but definitely by 1987, where the blue color was used for the names.
GREETING: Iristime! What a glorious interlude in your garden. Walk through it in the dewy morning, in the warm noonday sun, just before twilight, and revel in the blooms of this amazing flower. What an endowment of beauty. You just can't beat iris! So generously endowed with an infinite variety of colors, tints, and hues, flower size and habits. Few flowers offer such variety. As we commune and drink it this lavish display of nature's great beauties, Wordsworth's song of joy comes to mind, "My heart leaps up when I behold a rainbow in the sky." Indeed, he is the rainbow flower. We can adequately describe the aesthetic appeal that is hers alone.
We express our heartfelt thanks for your many fine orders and your kind comments. We hope that our efforts in this catalog will serve to acquaint you with the varieties available to you for your enjoyment - from the time tested standards to the most recent wonders that have come from the hands of the Iris hybridizers everywhere. We hope that we can again serve to fill your iris needs. Our aim is to furnish finer iris to enrich your garden and, at the same time, enjoy with us this glorious Queen of the Springtime Garden. May your iris season be most bountiful and pleasurable.
