COVER: The 1978 catalog features three 1978 introductions: Columbia Blue, Pinafore Pink and Stitch In Time. In the background is "Iris Time at Schreiner's," a photograph first used on the 1964 catalog and at least until 1984.
ABOUT: This catalog is similar to those of the Schreiner catalogs of the late 1940s until the mid 1970s. Irises were listed alphabetically, followed by their description with pictures scattered throughout the catalog. The font style consisted of the variety names in a sans-serif, all-caps font. The description was then slightly smaller in a serif-type font. They would use this format for many decades, perhaps until the 1985, but definitely by 1987, where the blue color was used for the names.
GREETING: Our cordial best wishes to all whether this is the first time your have our catalog, or you are an old friend. Over the years, we have propagated our stocks of the finer Iris to such a degree that we are able to offer these at nominal costs. Yet inflation's soaring costs necessitate, in the interest of efficiency, our not listing as many good Iris as we would like, much to our sorrow.
On the brighter side it is with enthusiastic pleasure that we welcome some startling new creations to our catalog, many pictured for the first time. Fifty-three years has indeed witnessed a panorama of many, many Iris. This past winter while reading I noticed this phrase: "Iris - Flower of the gods for gardens of the kings." An American's home is his castle and our gardens deserve the best in flower royalty. IRIS - Queen of the Springtime Garden!
