COVER: The 1982 catalog features three 1982 introductions: Cosmic Dance, Skiers' Delight and Wedding Candles. In the background is "Iris Time at Schreiner's," a photograph first used on the 1964 catalog and at least until 1984.
ABOUT: This catalog is similar to those of the Schreiner catalogs of the late 1940s until the mid 1970s. Irises were listed alphabetically, followed by their description with pictures scattered throughout the catalog. The font style consisted of the variety names in a sans-serif, all-caps font. The description was then slightly smaller in a serif-type font. They would use this format for many decades, perhaps until the 1985, but definitely by 1987, where the blue color was used for the names.
GREETING: As we complete this 57th issue of our Iris catalog an interesting not strikes us. The unique nature of our "Iris cycle" in some way parallels the ebbs and flows of teh weather. Our "highs" beging in the spring with the excitement of the first flowering of the new Iris. Last year our bloom season was extra fine. The weather too was benign enough to produce a fine crop of Iris for filling orders. Both were remarkable! Frenzy continues on through the long and hot summer shipping season. Fall season means winding things up. Soon "lows" will be with us. The winter weather echoes this same emphasis on extremes. May the winter treat all our Iris well.
An intersting question was asked us, . . . "What makes a specialty nursery like yours truly unique?" It is that in specializing only in IRIS we hope to gather and test a selection of the finer Iris originations from around the world. This selection of individually appraised varieties is a comprehensive listing of merchandise that you will not find anywhere else. We feel that our selectio of plants focuses on our customer's interests. We strive for varied, enjoyable and adaptable kinds of Iris that embody good garden peformance. They should be of intrinsic value to both the home gardener and the hobbyist. Each new Iris star adds a new light to a wonderful landscaped garden. We must have struck a responsive chord in 1981 for we enjoyed one of our finest Iris shipping seasons. It is with appreciation that we express our gratitude to you, our loyal customers. May your gardens produce a bounty of beautiful Iris and a galaxy of never ending enjoyment!
