COVER: This cover features the 1987 Introductions Cinnamon Girl, Lullaby of Spring and future Dykes Medalist Silverado. Gone is the old 1964 backdrop of "Iris Time at Schreiner's," in replacement of a plain and solid grass-green background.
ABOUT: This catalog is unique in several ways. First, they start honoring credit cards as a payment method. Second, David Schreiner had taken over writing the catalog greeting. The various cultivars (minus the new introductions) are now in the familiar aqua-blue colored font, although they remain a sans-serif type font (no feet). Also, they had misspelled their own introduction Burgermeister as BURGEMEISTER (without the second "R"), although this was corrected in the 1990 catalog. The beardless iris section has since been removed.
GREETING: Iris was the Greek goddess of the rainbow. Each spring she weaved a color tapestry with blossoms which symbolized a mesage of joy from Olympus. Iris lovers at bloom time each year feel a similar elan. We wish it were possible for our many friends to stroll in our magical gardens near Salem. We invite you to visit us in late May to mid-June during our blooming time. There you will find our formal Iris dispaly garden, our cut flower show and acres of flowering seedlings for viewing at your leisure. Remember our Iris are blooming for you. Come visit us!
This past year brought magnificent growing weather. Working with the Iris was a most delightful and rewarding experience. We wish to thank you, our loyal customers, for your continued patronage. One of our Australian friends perhaps expressed our feelings best when he wrote, "It was fairyland and I am the little elf that is somewhat less sprightly than he would like to be but nevertheless was renewed with the tonic of yet another wonderful, beautiful Iris season." We hope that each of your garens similarly blooms into a wonderous fairyland of color in 1987.
We always like to hear how your gardening experiences have come along. Of course, an extra dimension is provided by your photographs which allow us to see your own spot of beauty here on earth. Iris growing is a great sharing experience. We are so happy to be able to offer you the marvels of this precious flower. May your 1981 gardening season bring forth more of God's Wonders.
