Although the city underwent several name changes in its history, Beijing was put into place in 1421AD. When the Europeans discovered the Asian continent they referred to it as Peking and Western European maps used it as the name of the city until around 1949. Today, the names are used interchangeably, but Beijing still remains the preferred name.
